Update from Dr. Richard O’Malley, Superintendent of Florence 1 Schools
Adult Education services will be shared among Florence 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Graduation ceremonies have been scheduled for three different evenings at the Florence Center: June 5, 7:00 p.m. for South Florence; June 6, 7:30 p.m. for West Florence; and June 7, 7:00 p.m. for Wilson. Parents of high school seniors have been notified of ceremony dates and ticket information.
A Procurement Audit is scheduled for this month; a separate Performance Audit which will cover procedures for internal financial controls that relate to areas in purchasing has been scheduled also.
A school board sub-committee to select a Construction Program Manager has narrowed the construction firms from seven to three. The announcement of the selected firm will occur in the near future.
TIF (Tax Increment Finance) funding has been received in the amount of $11.5 million to complete projects at McClenaghan, Poynor, and downtown-related areas. The Construction Program manager will work with Florence 1 Schools to complete these projects.
School Safety - Fencing for Savanah Grove & South Florence is in progress; School Based Threat Assessment Teams are being formed; security cameras have been installed for every school and every building; research of Federal Funding for school safety projects is ongoing.
Inclusive playground equipment has been installed at McLaurin and Carver. Lester Elementary is scheduled to receive inclusive playground by the end of the school year.
Online Registration to Begin – Because of its year-round schedule, parents at Timrod will be provided the opportunity initially. Beginning July 15, all Florence 1 parents will have all summer long to register students online, although the hybrid version of registration will remain available at each school.
Facilities - Dr. O’Malley announced the following: Briggs (flooring and mural); Upgrades to all eight outside restrooms facilities at West Florence and repair of a main sewer-line break at Wilson. Maintenance plans are being developed at each school.
The 2019-20 Budget - Work has begun on presentation of a 2019-20 preliminary budget in May for final presentation in June.
