Florence County Adult Education staff to present virtually at national conference

For the second year in a row, two Florence County Adult Education staff members have been selected to present at the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) annual conference. Director Carol Hill and College and Career Navigator Anne Stone will be presenting a session called Paraphrases: A Key to Collaboration at All Levels.

The theme of the COABE conference is Embracing Collaboration. Hill said that she hopes their interactive workshop will be a chance to collaborate with others and share practices that work in Florence County.

“Collaboration is a practice that Florence County Adult Education honors in its work with students and staff and among five Florence school districts, local workforce programs and training providers, employers, and community agencies,” Hill said. “Anytime we submit a proposal for a professional presentation, we hope that it is a topic in which we have some expertise and credibility, in other words, we have something to share.  Additionally, we want it to be a topic that we can grow participant-capabilities as a part of the presentation. Lastly, we want to expand our own learning and capabilities as a part of the process. This session is designed to build participant capabilities as collaborators by focusing on the skill of paraphrasing.”
Students in classes offered through Adult Education regularly use paraphrasing, Hill said, and it is a tool that enhances their learning community.

“Paraphrasing is practiced systemically in Florence County Adult Education to promote understanding, manage conflict, and promote collaboration and community,” Hill said. “When a listener paraphrases what a person is saying, it says to the person, "I want to understand how you feel and what you are saying." This is a way to honor others, their learning, and their contributions. In Florence County Adult Education classroom interactions, conferences, and meetings, paraphrases are a norm within the culture. They are offered after someone speaks, and before asking a question or offering a personal opinion.”

The virtual COABE conference will take place March 22-24, 2021. COABE’s mission is to inspire educators so adults succeed and communities thrive. The Coalition on Adult Basic Education exists to provide leadership, communication, professional development, and advocacy for adult education and literacy practitioners to advance quality services for all adult learners.
