October is National Farm to School Month

Important Dates! 

Making It Grow

October 1st  Viewing Party for SCETV “Making it Grow” featuring the Farm at Briggs   6:30-8 p.m. at Briggs Cafeteria.         

 Florence City Center Farmers Market

October 19th Farm to School Day at the Florence City Center Farmers Market 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. 369 West Cheves Street  We will be selling pumpkins, 4H will be there with games and Chartwells will be preparing samples of a few of our new lunch items! Also, Florence One students will have an art display featuring agricultural themed still lifes. 

Week of October 21st- “Make Your Plate SC Grown”  Chartwells is planning a special lunch! More details to come!                                      

October 22nd Mr. Charles Brigman will be speaking at Briggs about life on the farm. His talk will be recorded and available for viewing on YouTube on the 22nd of October. 

Literacy

District media specialists are working together to create a list of reading materials to support student interest in the Farm to School / Table movement.  Students can access the resource list through the Destiny program. See your media specialist for more information. 

Art

There will be an exhibit of vegetable/fruit or farm animal still life artwork at the City Center Farmers Market on Saturday, October 19th.  The work can be any media but must be 2D, mounted on construction paper, and properly labeled. Three to 4 pieces will be accepted from each school.  Please contact Jeff Murrie for more information. Celebrate Farm to School Month in October! This is open to all Florence One students!

Suggested School Activities

  • Invite a local farmer to lunch to eat with the students!
  • Farm Spirit Day- Students and faculty love to wear their best farm attire and boots to school! 
  • Write about a memory related to agriculture!
  • Interview a parent or grandparent about living on a farm!
