New administrators named in Florence 1 Schools

At its most recent regular meeting, the Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees approved the administration’s recommendation to hire two new administrators.

Jeffrey A Gaines has been named the Director of Arts and Innovative Programs.  He will provide instructional support and leadership for Visual and Performing Arts and for Innovative Arts Programs in Florence 1 Schools.

Gaines most recently served in Florence 1 Schools as an assistant principal at West Florence High.  He began his educational career with classroom experiences as director of bands and choral activities in Barnwell County, (2008-2011); director of bands at Southside Middle in Florence 1 Schools,  (2011-2014); and director of bands and choral activities in Clarendon School District Two (2014-2017).  From 2017-2018, he served as assistant principal at Manning Elementary School in Clarendon District Two.

Gaines holds the following educational credentials: a Bachelor of Music Education (Instrumental) from Newberry College; a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision, and Master of Education in Classroom Leadership, from Southern Wesleyan University.  He is currently in pursuit of the Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Assessment at South Wesleyan University as well. 

Tara J. King is the new principal at Wallace-Gregg Elementary. For the past two years, she has served as  principal of Washington Street Elementary in Hartsville, (Darlington County School District). Prior to that, she served as principal at West Hartsville Elementary.

King began her educational career as a fifth grade teacher at Brunson-Dargan Elementary in Darlington (2007-2009), and she later held administrative positions in the Darlington schools as elementary curriculum facilitator (2009-2011) and as a facilitator of a program to support child development at four Hartsville elementary schools where she coordinated training for faculty and staff, parents, and community members (2011-13).

King holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University, a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership from Winthrop University, and she is currently seeking an Educational Specialists Degree in Educational Administration from South Carolina State University.

At an earlier meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the administration’s recommendation of Shand Josey to fill the principal position at Southside Middle.  Josey most recently served as assistant principal at Williams Middle School (2016-2019).

Prior to working at Williams, Josey served as Curriculum Coordinator at John W. Moore Intermediate School from 2014 until 2016. Josey, who received certification as a National Board Certified teacher in 2009, has over 16 years teaching experience including service at Royall Elementary in Florence 1 Schools (2005-2014), in York 2, Richland 1, and Charleston counties.

 She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Clemson University and a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from Winthrop University.
