Southside Teacher of the Year

Photo of Lynn Perkins Lynn C. Perkins a Nationally Board Certified Teacher has been the chorus teacher at Southside Middle School for 27 years with a total of 33 years music teaching experience. She received a Bachelor in Music Education degree from Wingate College and a Masters in Elementary Education from Francis Marion College. Mrs. Perkins has served on the SC Music Educators Association (SCMEA) Middle School Choral Committee since 1998 providing music education experiences for SC students at the state level.

Working with musically gifted and talented students is a strength for Mrs. Perkins. She has written several grants to provide opportunities for students to excel in the Arts. In 2012-13 the Southside Fine Arts and Technology Academy was created by the Southside Fine Arts Department. Since that time, Mrs. Perkins’ choirs have received Excellent and Superior Ratings at state choral assessment events. She has students make All-State Chorus each year and has had students sing in Regional and National Honor Choirs.

Mrs. Perkins was recognized as Southside’s Teacher of the Year in 1996-97 and again in 2018-19 and selected as an Honor Roll Teacher for 2018-19. She was selected as the District STAR Teacher for December 2018. Mrs. Perkins says middle school is a pivotal place for adolescents and being a chorus teacher allows her to encourage potential singers on their musical journey. Passionate about music, she strives to help each student grow as a person and grow musically in some way in order to reach their full potential.
