Taste of Briggs continues delicious tradition more than a decade old
The Taste of Briggs is back again, bringing together fundraising and fun. The annual event will take place April 11 at Briggs Elementary School, 1012 Congaree Drive in Florence, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The family-friendly Farm to Table themed event will feature a variety of vendors with delicious foods and plenty of activities.
There will be a scavenger hunt, chicken poop bingo, opportunities for photos with the Farm at Briggs’ chickens, antique tractors and even some Farm to School items available for purchase. Families can visit with pigs and goats then explore the South Carolina Farm Bureau’s Combine Simulator.
“Briggs loves hosting this event every year,” said Principal Tara Newton. “It is a fun way for our community to see what we are doing at the school, especially with our Farm to School Program; the money raised supports those efforts and some other much needed projects.”
Along with sustaining The Farm at Briggs, ventures supported by the Taste include capital improvements like painting, flooring and water bottle filling stations. Scholarships for students to participate in field trips, a care closet for school supplies and personal items for students, and teacher appreciation efforts are also supported by the Taste.
“We have so many awesome sponsors that make this event a success,” Newton said. “They are the reason we are able to fund our needs at Briggs.”
During the event, attendees will be able to explore the Farm at Briggs which features a variety of chickens, bees, a garden and, soon, an outdoor classroom.
Briggs Farm to School Coordinator Jeff Murrie said that he loves showing students how much fun gardening can be, not to mention how tasty it is, and that small efforts like composting food waste make a big difference.
“Students get so excited to come to my classroom because we are always learning new things,” Murrie said. “One day we made black bean burgers; another day we were getting our worm farm set up. They take everything we learn to heart and it makes an impact on them and their families.”
Representatives will be available from the Pee Dee Land Trust, 4-H, Pee Dee Bee Keepers, Moore Farms Botanical Gardens and other organizations that contribute to agricultural efforts in the Pee Dee.
