Florence 1 Schools to Send Students to All State Choral Events

Six High School Students Make All-State Chorus

A total of sixteen students in Florence 1 Schools have auditioned and made 2019 all State choral events.

Six local high school students have made the South Carolina Music Education Association’s (SCMEA) 2019 All-State Chorus.  South Florence High School’s all-state chorus members are Antonio Brown, Joryll Robinson and Jah’Reon Robinson.  West Florence High School’s all-state choir members are Dontex Haggins, Joshua Barrett and Kendal Harvey.

In order to be selected, the students auditioned in an acapella quintet singing a classical piece by Handel.  They were also required to sight-sing a melody that they had never seen before.

The All-State Choral clinic is a weeklong event that will be held at Winthrop University in March and conducted by prominent composers/conductors from across the country.  The program provides an opportunity for superior choral students to sing together and to represent South Carolina in statewide events.  The South Carolina All-State Chorus program provides an intensive and demanding vocal experience, which fosters self-discipline and personal growth as well as musicianship.

High school music instructors of students who made all-state chorus are Dr. Erick Figueras, (South Florence) and Nikki Frabott (West Florence).

10 Students Make South Carolina State Elementary Honors Chorus

Ten Florence 1 Schools elementary students have made the 2019 South Carolina Elementary Honor Chorus (SCEHC).  They are  Keelie Gerald, Jenna Fox, Zebriah Burks, and Evan Edwards (Greenwood Elementary); Prisca Mullins, Karleigh McKay, Leanna Sheffieldand Kilee Brown (John  W. Moore Intermediate);  Jacob Gray and Jennalyn Gray, (Dewey L. Carter Elementary).

Elementary music instructors are Christina Welch, (Greenwood); Dawn Kirven, (John W. Moore); and C. Brent Bennett, Dewey L. Carter.

The South Carolina Elementary Honor Choir (SCEHC) allows gifted young singers an opportunity to perform in a large choir with other children from across the state. The choral clinic will be held in Columbia in February.

In order to be selected, students echoed four different melodic patterns correctly, sang a harmony exercise while staying on their assigned part, and performed "America/My Country 'Tis of Thee" as a solo with excellent vocal quality, correct rhythm and pitch.  Students usually need a perfect score of 44 or a nearly perfect score of 42 or 43 in order to qualify.
