Principal Shand Josey, Florence 1’s current Principal of the Year, surprised her staff and students with the news via a school-wide Google Meet.

“I am honored that our school has been named a finalist for the prestigious Palmetto’s Finest Award,” Josey said. “This recognition is a true testament to the dedication, passion, and hard work of our incredible students, staff, and the entire South Florence community. Being selected as a finalist affirms the collective commitment to excellence that we strive for each day. We are proud of all the accomplishments that have brought us to this point, and we remain focused on continuing to provide an environment where all of our students can thrive and succeed.”

Superintendent Richard O’Malley said that he is pleased to see South Florence’s dedication to student success being acknowledged.

“Ms. Josey has created a culture of excellence and it is evident that her staff and students have embraced her vision,” O’Malley said. “Under her leadership, South Florence has seen outstanding academic growth and the Arts Magnet program has produced a remarkable number of students who are receiving statewide recognition for their work. Ms. Josey and her staff are always striving to provide opportunities for all of their students and we are proud that they have been named a finalist for the Palmetto’s Finest award.”

In order to be considered for the Palmetto’s Finest award, schools must submit an extensive application that includes information about school culture, student achievement and instructional programs. The Palmetto’s Finest Committee also visits each school for an on-site evaluation. Finalists will receive a second visit from the Palmetto’s Finest committee in late February or early March and winners will be announced in April 2025.
