Leroy to lead West Florence for 2025-2026 school year
Changes are coming to West Florence for the 2025-2026 school year after the Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees accepted principal Matt Dowdell’s resignation and approved April Leroy as the school’s new principal.
Leroy is currently serving as the principal at John W. Moore Middle School, a position she has held since 2020. During her tenure at Moore, Leroy and the Lions have earned several accolades including Florence 1 Schools Principal of the Year, Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Lighthouse School and Palmetto’s Finest school. The school also earned an Excellent school report card from the South Carolina Department of Education.
Leroy said she is thankful for her time at Moore Middle School and is grateful for the opportunity to now lead West Florence High School.
“It has been an immense privilege to work with our incredible students, dedicated families, and amazing staff at Moore Middle School for the last 5 years,” Leroy said. “Together, we have achieved great successes that are truly unique and special. I am excited to continue my service within Florence One Schools as I transition to West Florence High School next year. I look forward to this new opportunity and continuing to build upon a tradition of excellence.”
Florence 1 Schools Superintendent Richard O’Malley said that Leroy doesn’t just lead a school she inspires a community, empowers her staff, and ignites the potential in every student.
“Over the last five years, Ms. Leroy has shown that she is a student-centered leader,” O’Malley said. “Moore Middle School has been recognized across the state and country for the academic excellence achieved in just a few years under her leadership. I believe she will bring the same innovative and transformative mindset to her new role as principal at West Florence High School.”
Leroy will begin her new role on July 1st.
