Florence 1 Schools implements new digital mapping program to increase school safety
Florence 1 Schools continues to lead the way in school safety and security efforts, implementing a new digital, interactive mapping program that provides first responders with critical information during emergency calls. Currently, mapping has been completed for the district’s three high school campuses, including the South Florence Freshman Academy and neighboring Advantage Academy, with plans to expand to all of the district’s 24 schools.
Florence 1 has partnered with GeoComm, a Minnesota-based company that utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) data to construct digital maps that can pinpoint not only the layout and entry points of a building but also life-saving details such as the location of fire extinguishers and automated external defibrillators (AED).
Deputy Superintendent Kyle Jones said that the new system will ensure first responders have as much information as possible before arriving at a school.
“Time is of the essence during any emergency,” Jones said. “If we can remove barriers for emergency personnel when they are called to our campuses, we are going to do that. We are thankful that the technology GeoComm provides cuts down on the amount of time that could be spent trying to gain access to a building, instead allowing first responders to use that time to actually respond to the emergency.”
One key feature of the program is the ability to query the map to view a particular school, room, or point of interest location in real-time. GeoComm said that the partnership with Florence 1 is ushering in a new path for school districts in the state.
"We're extremely proud to work with Florence 1 as they lead the way in school safety across South Carolina by adopting GeoComm's interactive school maps,” said Bill McCullough, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at GeoComm. “Their commitment to the safety of their students and staff is truly inspiring, and we are honored to support them in setting a new standard for innovative school safety in South Carolina."
GeoComm staff recently completed onsite walkthroughs of these Florence 1 schools to confirm the floor plans provided by the district. While on-site, they measured each room, added points of interest, and labeled entrances and exits.
Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said that he appreciates the proactive measures Florence 1 has continuously taken when it comes to school safety.
“The Florence County Sheriff ‘s Office has a great relationship with Florence 1 Schools,” Joye said. “Over the last several years, the district has adopted many new procedures to help keep our students and our community safe. We appreciate their willingness to advance their security efforts with the implementation of innovative technology such as these interactive digital maps.”
