Florence 1 Names Josey Principal of the Year
On Wednesday afternoon South Florence Principal Shand Josey thought she was walking into a meeting with her staff in the school auditorium. Instead, Josey received a surprise: she is the Florence 1 Schools Principal of the Year.
Josey has worked in Florence 1 since 2005, becoming principal of South Florence in 2020. Just two years later, she was named the 4A Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association. Florence 1 Superintendent Richard O’Malley said that Josey is truly deserving of this award.
“I am proud to have Ms. Josey serving on the administrative team in Florence 1 Schools,” O’Malley said. “During her time at South Florence, there has been a tremendous culture change amongst the staff and the students. She has set high standards and is constantly striving for excellence. I believe she is a wonderful example of the dedicated educators we have in Florence 1 who are pushing our district forward.”
South Florence Strength and Conditioning Coach, Shawn Armstrong, said he was excited to see Josey’s dedication being recognized.
“Mrs. Shand Josey is a true representation of what leadership looks like,” Armstrong said. “She leads by example and does not ask someone to complete a task that she is not willing to do herself. She challenges both students and staff to strive for greatness on a daily basis. There is no doubt that South Florence High School is a better place because of Mrs. Josey. We are very excited that she has been selected as the Florence 1 Principal of the Year and can't wait to celebrate this great achievement!”
Josey said that the award was a complete surprise, complete with a marching band introduction, but one that she greatly appreciated.
“My greatest professional joy is watching what my staff does every day: pouring into our students,” Josey said. “The dedication and commitment they have to what we do at South Florence is truly heartwarming. This award means a lot to me but this isn’t an award for me; it is an award for South Florence for what we do every day. It is a GREAT time to be a Bruin.”
