F1S Director of Transportation Selected To Serve On SCDE Steering Committee
Florence 1 Schools Director of Transportation Mitchell Washington has been selected to serve on a state-wide Transportation Steering Committee with the South Carolina Department of Education. This new initiative will bring together 10 SCDE staff members and 10 transportation directors from districts across the state to review the current student transportation program. The committee’s review, and subsequent recommendations to the State Director of Transportation, will help shape the future of our state’s transportation program.
The committee will begin meeting in March and will meet regularly both virtually and in person to “help solve complex problems and develop forward-thinking solutions that could impact student transportation in South Carolina for generations to come,” according to SCDE.
Washington said that he is thankful to be included in this brand-new initiative that will impact districts, and students, across the state.
“I am beyond grateful to be considered for the steering committee,” Washington said. “I look forward to presenting ideas and offering suggestions to help shape the future of student transportation. This is a great opportunity for me to offer valuable input on the processes that we have in place in our district in hopes of helping other districts find solutions to statewide issues. Being selected for this committee exemplifies my dedication to serve not only our students here in Florence 1, but the students of South Carolina to make it a better system for all.”
Florence 1 CFO Laura Showe said that Washington will bring a wealth of knowledge to the steering committee.
“Florence 1 Schools is proud to have a Transportation Director that is seen, not only by our District, by the State as a problem solver, innovator and always looking for a positive solution,” Showe said. “We are absolutely sure his input will be valuable and forward thinking as we have seen this first hand with the Transportation Department at Florence 1 Schools. Since Mitchell was named the Director, we have seen significant improvements in both service and employee morale; we know that he will keep the same focus and balance in his role on this steering committee.”
