Mrs. McKithen, Shalecka

Hello, my name is Mrs. Shalecka McKithen, known by most as Mrs. MK. I am a talented educator with an unconditional yearning for educating the children of the future.  I have, over the years, gained much insight in educating and it is my belief that every student can and will learn and grow, meeting the expectations set and scaffolded by the educating facilitator. 

Educational Experiences:

I am South Carolina state certified. I obtained a Master’s Level of Education: a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education, from Charleston Southern University, minoring in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, from the University of Phoenix. I am CPR and First –Aid certified. I have also completed the Read to Succeed, state reading intervention initiative and have recieved certificate endorsement. 

Teaching Experience:

I have 14 years of teaching experience, ranging from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade.

I have held many position in my career as an educator, including: Lead Teacher, National Junior Beta Club Coordinator, Assistant Cheerleading and Step Team Coach, Grade Level Team Leader, Reading Interventionist Coach, Homebound Facilitator, New Teacher Mentor, and of course Classroom Facilitator. 

I have taught a variety of subject areas and grade levels including: Pre-K Georgia State Curriculum, 3rd Grade Self-Contained, 4th Grade Self-Contained, 6th Grade Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies, 7th Grade ELA, 8th Grade ELA and Social Studies, and Sunday School Teacher.

Educational Philosophy:

 My educational philosophy is “All students can and will learn, attempting to rise to the expectations set by their educator.” I feel that it is the teacher’s responsibility to educate the student and present education in a meaningful way in order to fully educate the student. I realize that in order to be a teacher, you must first be a learner. Every day there is something new to learn and I am a willing vessel for being further educated. I am a fast learner, a people’s person and feel that my ability to enhance a Home-School connection can prove to be one of my most remarkable attributes. I am a real go-getter and see challenges as a way of embellishing life. I have an entrepreneur’s belief and determination with unwavering dedication.  I accept challenges with an open-mind, expecting to learn something new, from every experience encounter in life.

Other Things to Know:

I was an active volunteer in my residential community: helping to organize youth events, cleaning the outside areas of housing complexes and volunteering at nursing homes.  I have worked with the local churches of downtown Charleston area, educating low-income, at risk adolescence boys and girls about the health of abstinence. I have had the opportunity to exercise my leadership abilities by putting together many lessons and hosting many events targeting parent/teacher communication, parental involvement, parents as educators, and team meetings between grade levels, successfully resulting in recorded and acknowledged dramatic achievement gains. I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta, an organization committed to community service, scholarship, and leadership.
