From little seeds grow mighty trees. -Aeschylus
Welcome to Brockington Elementary Magnet School! My name is LaKesha Durant and I serve as the Literacy Coach and MTSS Coordinator for Brockington Elementary.
In order for students to grow into strong readers, they will need deep roots in phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency. These five essential components are intricately woven together to create conditions necessary for students to become mighty readers. As a literacy coach, my role is to support classroom teachers in cultivating fertile ground and planting seeds that will lend way for our students to grow into stronger readers and writers. I support classroom teachers in effectively using curriculum, instructional strategies, and data to improve student learning.
Since 2004, I have enjoyed learning and growing in one of the world’s greatest professions. I have had the opportunity to teach second, third, and sixth grade in Indiana and South Carolina. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from South Carolina State University and a Master of Science in Education and Leadership from Indiana University. I have been recognized as the 2012 Teacher of the Year for Garden City Elementary (Indianapolis) and 2021 District Teacher of the Year for Florence Four School District.
This year, our school will utilize Florence One’s Instructional Model, HMH Into Reading, Orton-Gillingham, and Lexia as resources to support student growth in literacy. Another year brings another opportunity to cultivate the minds of young learners and work with an amazing staff to grow stronger readers and writers and I most certainly look forward to it!
