North Vista Elementary is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme / Middle Years Programme / Diploma Programme / Career-related Programme (delete as appropriate) and pursuing authorization as an IB World School.
What is PYP?
- PYP is a part of an IB education. (part of the International Baccalaureate continuum)
- The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
- It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from the six subject areas.
- PYP places a powerful emphasis on inquiry.
- The IB Primary Years Programme
- addresses students' academic, social and emotional well-being
- encourages students to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning.
- supports students' efforts to gain understanding of the world and to function comfortably within it.
- helps students establish personal values as a foundation upon which international-mindedness will develop and flourish.

PYP Model
-
The six subject areas identified within the IB Primary Years Programme:
- language (primary, and a second language)
- math
- science
- social studies
- arts
- personal, social, and physical education
To plan this instruction, teachers work with the state standards, district resources, instructional coaches, and other teachers. Together, grade level teachers collaborate to plan units.
One distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is that teachers plan units to fall under six themes. These themes provide IB World Schools the framework to bring local and global issues into the curriculum. Students are able to connect their learning in ways that allow them to understand the world around them.
These six themes are:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- Sharing the planet
Grades 2-6 will use all six themes during the school year. Grades 4K, 5K, and 1 will use four themes to build their units.
Through collaboration with other teachers and coaches, teachers map out how all subjects areas fit into these IB themes.

PYP is an International Baccalaureate program designed for elementary-aged students. Learning is guided by six themes:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- Sharing the planet
Students in grades two through six participate in Spanish classes. All students at North Vista focus on the IB learner profile, the PYP attitudes, and work as grade levels to study specific countries around the world. PYP focuses on social, academic and emotional well-being of all students and encourages them to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning.
Everyone is welcome to learn more about PYP during the informational session on February 18th. This session will also include applications for students in grades 5k-6th grade who would like to attend NVE for the 2021-2022 school year, who are not currently enrolled.
