Major Walter "Rhett" Anderson, U.S. Air Force (Retired)

I was born in Chicago, Illinois and, as an Army "Brat," I lived in--and traveled to--a number of different places in the U.S. and overseas.  I initially attended Spring Valley HS in Columbia but transferred to Lower Richland HS for my Senior year and graduated in 1980.

While at the University of South Carolina, I was very involved in college life: a "Walk-on” football player the same year George Rogers won the Heisman Trophy, joined a social fraternity of which I was later elected Chapter President, a member of Air Force ROTC Detachment 775 where I was awarded a 2-year Scholarship and, in May 1984--all culminating in my being commissioned an Air Force 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation.

My next 24 years found me deeply engaged as a Nuclear Missile officer and, among my varied jobs in the Air Force, I spent about half of my military career as an Instructor or in teaching-related roles.  While stationed in Nebraska, I met a Junior ROTC Instructor and his cadets working a Community Service project.  Needless to say, that profound "meeting" sealed my decision to pursue JROTC as a post-military career.  After my last tour of military duty, an exciting role as an Exchange Officer with the German Air Force, I followed my "Dream" to become a JROTC instructor.

I began my Air Force Junior ROTC Instructor career at South Pointe HS where I enjoyed 6 highly successful years before opting for the same position at Zebulon B. Vance HS in Charlotte, NC. After two years in "CMS," I took a break from teaching by entering the corporate realm as a Customer Service & Sales Representative where I had the #1 customer retention rate among my peers.

In 2017, Headquarters Air Force Junior ROTC contacted me about returning to teaching and I chose West Florence HS over several other schools in the Carolinas--and WEST has been a fabulous fit for me.  It is an honor and privilege to "serve" the cadets of SC-022, our school and Florence community--am deeply proud to be a member of the KNIGHT Faculty "Team!"

Besides teaching/coaching, my other passion is motorcycles.  I'm also delighted to be the "Voice" of the Knight Football team on Friday nights in the Fall.
