    About our Principal...

    Robert Craig Washington (Craig) was born in Lake City, SC. At the age of three, his family moved to Johnsonville, SC where he received a public education in Florence School District Five. In June of 1991, Mr. Washington graduated from Johnsonville High School. He received a scholarship to attend Charleston Southern University where he majored in Music Education. Upon graduation, he began his teaching career in Charleston County School District at McClellanville Middle and Lincoln High School. After two years of teaching in Charleston County, he returned to Florence, where he taught one year in Florence School District Four before being promoted to Assistant Principal at Sumter High School in Sumter School District. After serving three years as Assistant Principal, Mr. Washington was appointed the Principal of Crosswell Drive Elementary School, where he served as their Principal for five years.  Currently, Mr. Washington is the Principal of Southside Middle School in Florence School District One, where he has served for almost twelve years. 

    During his tenure as Principal at Southside Middle, the school has earned a number of awards. Southside Middle School has earned the following awards: Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) School, Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) Recipient, Palmetto Silver Award, National Bronze Healthy School Award, SC Healthy Schools Award, 2010 Red Carpet School, 2011 AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), and a 2012 and 2013 ESEA rating of “B”. Most recently the school was awarded AdvancED STEM Certification.  Mr. Washington has earned recognition as the 2013 SCAEA Outstanding Principal of the Year, 2015 SCMEA Honor Administrator of the Year and 2017 Florence School District One Principal of the Year.         

    Mr. Washington earned a Bachelor of Art from Charleston Southern University and a Master of Education from The Citadel in School Administration and has thirty hours above his Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina. He is an avid supporter of arts integration, STEM/STEAM education, and special education.   

    Mr. Washington resides in Florence with his wife Barbie Washington and his two daughters, Mya and Briana.
