Wellness Policy

In accordance with the Local Wellness Policy guidelines, we have set measurable goals for the following wellness-related categories:

1. Nutrition Education and Promotion

2. Physical Activity

3. Other- School-based Wellness Opportunities

Nutrition Education and Promotion Goal
All Florence 1 Schools (F1S) will continue implementing district-wide nutrition education through the Harvest of the Month Program by featuring a locally grown, plant-
forward recipe on all cafeteria lines at least once per month. The program will be promoted by student-led and district marketing campaigns that promote the featured dish
and its health benefits through school announcements, posters, newsletters, and social media. These campaigns will be designed to engage students, staff, families, and the local
community, with the goal of increasing awareness, participation, and consumption of locally sourced, nutritious foods within the F1S school nutrition program.
 

Physical Activity Education and Promotion Goal
F1S will increase engagement in physical activity by schools participating in at least one
physical activity event per school year, such as the National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School
Day or a community-based physical activity event (e.g., Community 5k, walk, or school fun
run). These events will be promoted through school communication channels to students, staff, and families, along with educational messaging on the health benefits of regular physical activity.
 

Other School-Based Wellness Activities Goal
By August 2025, all Florence 1 Schools will designate a Wellness Lead and Co-Lead to
establish a functioning school-level Wellness Committee. Each Wellness Committee will
consist of a minimum of three members and will meet at least four times per school year to
plan and implement wellness initiatives. These initiatives will align with the MUSC Boeing
Center for Children’s Wellness School-Based Wellness Initiative and the F1S Blue Zones
Initiative. This includes a focus on nutrition, physical activity, social-emotional wellness, and staff wellness. Wellness Committees will regularly promote wellness opportunities to students, staff, families, and the broader community through coordinated outreach and school-based wellness opportunities.
