Spotlight on English Learners
EL Family Night 2017
On March 16, Florence School District 1 hosted its annual English Learners (EL) Family night to celebrate the various cultures represented in our community. This is a time for families and community sponsors to join together to promote cultural awareness. Our families had the opportunity to hear from local guest speakers. A McLeod Safe Kids representative shared ways to ensure the safety and health of children engaging in sporting, school,, and at home activities. A representative from Florence Darlington Technical College discussed available assistance for those aspiring to obtain a post-secondary degree.
Those in attendance were treated to a musical performance by Andrea Martin, Maria Claudia Valenzuela, and Pari Patel, all of Lucy T. Davis Elementary School. They also sampled food from cultures around the world, donated by various restaurants in the Florence community. Cultures represented included Greek, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Indian, and American Southern.

We would also like to thank our EL families for their continuous support in encouraging cultural awareness and community involvement in the on-going cultural growth and education of our students!
In January, students in the Spanish class at South Florence High School visited language learners at Lester Elementary School. The students read books together in both Spanish and English. The elementary students were also given 2 books each to take home and share with their families. Extra books were left for instructional support and to be passed out among other students in the school.
