B.A. Elementary Education (Limestone University) Certified South Carolina Elementary Teacher (Endorsement: R2S Literacy Teacher)

Ms. Sophia Kottmer

This is my first year teaching and I couldn't be more excited to be teaching at Delmae! Delmae has one of the most diverse groups of students I have seen in South Carolina. I love the atmosphere here - having a strong classroom community is one of the core foundations here. I believe that students grow tremendously when they are a part of a strong classroom community. Each and every student brings something to the classroom, not just academically, but also socially and emotionally. As I help students grow individually, my goal is to learn as much from them as they do from me. We can always learn new things from others and it's important to embrace what they bring to the table.

Why I became a teacher: 1. I want to change how students feel about going to school and learning. Personally, I did not enjoy going to school and saw learning as a chore... I want to change that for others. My goal as an educator is to allow students to recognize the importance of learning and how fun it can be! 2. Students should be able to express their emotions in an appropriate and healthy way. As students experience real-world problems and situations, I want to help them learn and practice ways to deal with how they are feeling. 3. We spend much of our time in school the first 18-20 years of our lives and it's important that I use that time to teach academic skills as well as soft skills (i.e. communicating, listening, teamwork, time managment, etc.) so they can become/continue to be successful citizens.

More about me... I graduated from Limestone University with a B.A. in Elementary Education and minor in Business Administration (May 2021). I was raised in a family of 5 (mom, dad, 1 older sister, and 1 younger sister). I was born in California and have lived in 3 different states and 1 other country. I moved to Florence a few months after I graduated from Limestone, which is about 3 hours west of Florence. Some of my favorite things... beaches, Trolli Eggs, Kit-Kats, Green Bay Packers, sushi, and Tropical Smoothie Cafe. I also love to travel, try new foods, watch sports, hike, and oragnize/decorate!
