    A Sixth Grade Gifted Math Unit

    Students in “Drafting & Design” will be studying house plan design, scale drawings, and architect responsibilities.  Through the scale drawing process, the students will be using architectural scales, drafting triangles, templates, etc., to create original house plans and recreate previously drawn designs.  Room arrangement, size, location, and standard building codes will be discussed.

    South Carolina Math Standards:

    • 7.GM.1- Determine the scale factor and translate between scale models and actual measurements (e.g., lengths, area) of real-world objects and geometric figures using proportional reasoning.
      • Introduce scale (¼” = 1’-0”), (⅛” = 1’-0”)
      • Convert measurements to ⅛” scale
    • 7.GM.2- Construct triangles and special quadrilaterals using a variety of tools (e.g., freehand, ruler and protractor, technology).
    • 7.GM.6- Apply the concepts of two- and three-dimensional figures to real-world and mathematical situations.

    SC ELA Standards

    • Standard 1: I.6.1.1--Formulate relevant, self-generated questions based on interests and/or needs that can be investigated.

    Gifted Standards

    • To develop inquiry skills at a level of complexity, abstractness, and depth appropriate for gifted learners. 

     

     

    Bridges

    A Sixth Grade Gifted Math Unit

    Bridges is a project-based unit requiring students to work in groups, or companies, to design and build bridges made out of toothpicks. Through research and teacher-lead lessons, students design a bridge given a building code and overall bridge dimensions, and draw their bridge to scale. Students also must complete a job proposal and turn in along with their completed bridge design. Students then choose a design from the completed designs within their companies and build the chosen bridge just as it is drawn. Completed bridges will be tested for strength and the bridge holding the most weight before collapsing will be the winner.

     
    South Carolina Math Standards:

    • 6.NS.2 Fluently divide multi-digit whole numbers using a standard algorithmic approach.
    • 6.RP.3 Apply the concepts of ratios and rates to solve real-world and mathematical problems
      • d. Apply concepts of unit rate to solve problems, including unit pricing and constant speed.
      • f. Solve one-step problems involving ratios and unit rates (e.g., dimensional analysis).
