We are beginning to see some students in the Health Room who have flu-like illnesses and have already
been dealing with many who have the stomach virus. Please review the following recommendations
which include simple actions to take to help protect the health of your child and your family.
● Instruct your child to cover his/her mouth with tissue when coughing or sneezing. The tissue
should then be disposed of in the trashcan immediately.
● Instruct your child to wash his/her hands often with soap and water. Hand sanitizer is also
effective. (Our staff members do an excellent job of reminding students about this point.)
● If your child is sick (including vomiting, diarrhea, fever), he/she should stay home from school
and limit contact with others to decrease the spread of the illness. If your child is out of school
due to an illness and/or fever, they should stay out of school for at least 24 hours after fever
resolves without the use of fever-reducing medications. If they have diarrhea or are vomiting
they also need to remain out of school for at least 24 hours until symptoms resolve.
● Instruct your child to avoid touching his/her eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
● Advise your child not to share personal items such as utensils and to avoid drinking from the
same cup, carton or water bottle.
● At home, routinely clean items or surfaces that are touched frequently. We adhere to this at
school by regularly cleaning/disinfecting surfaces throughout the school.
